TMEA facts

The scale of the Texas process is stated plainly on TMEA’s own page:

over 70,000 high school students across the state audition in their TMEA Region

And the progression:

Individuals perform selected music for a panel of judges who rank each instrument or voice part. A select group of musicians advances to compete against musicians from other Regions in their TMEA Area. The highest-ranking musicians judged at the TMEA Area competitions qualify to perform in one of 18 Texas All-State ensembles

So the path is Region → Area → State, with a ranking (not a rating) at every stage. This is a structural difference from New York worth understanding if you compare notes with out-of-state friends: NYSSMA’s ordinary festivals are evaluations against a standard, while every stage of the Texas pipeline is a competition against the people in the room.

TMEA auditions are not open entry. Two requirements run through your school.

A student must be enrolled as a full-time student (as defined by rule of the State Board of Education) in a Texas school during the semester in which the TMEA activity takes place.

A student must be certified by their TMEA Active Member director as an actively participating member in rehearsals and performance activities of the school’s parent musical organization during the entire semester.

If your school has no parent musical group, the student must be certified by a TMEA member sponsor instead.

Two things follow. Your band or orchestra director controls your entry, so the conversation about auditioning has to happen with them early. And leaving the school ensemble mid-semester can cost you the audition, whatever your playing level.

TMEA sets a hard ceiling on how long you can keep auditioning.

A student may not participate after the end of the eighth semester following their first enrollment in the ninth grade.

Eight semesters is four school years, counted from when you first entered ninth grade — not from when you started auditioning. If you repeat a year or take time away, the clock does not pause.

TMEA publishes its audition material on announced dates rather than releasing it quietly. For the 2026–2027 cycle:

Etude Books: Available April 15 at 8 am (CT)

Etudes: Available Monday, July 13, at Noon (CT)

Two separate dates, months apart. The books come first; the specific etudes you will actually play arrive in July.

TMEA’s Band Division publishes its Area audition dates well in advance: January 9, 2027 for this cycle, with January 8, 2028 already listed for the next. There are eight Areas, lettered A through H, each serving a fixed grouping of Regions — for example:

Area A - Regions 1, 6, 7, 16, 22

Put the published dates in a row and the year has a fixed shape: etude books in April, etudes in July, errata frozen September 1, Region auditions in the fall, Area in early January. If you make it past Region, the winter holidays are not a break — they are the two weeks before the highest-stakes audition of the cycle. Students who learn the Area date late learn it as bad news about their December.

Corrections to the audition material are posted up to a stated cutoff.

No errata changes will be made after September 1.

This matters more than it looks. A walkthrough video recorded in June may be describing a slightly different document than the one you will play. After September 1 the material is fixed, so anything published after that date is safe to trust against your copy.

TMEA attaches a restriction to the audition material itself.

Etudes are copyrighted materials. Do not post etudes on any websites or social media.
