NYSSMA’s All-State application instructions are addressed to teachers, not students.

Each teacher (director of performance group ONLY) must enter their own students’ applications.

Applications are electronic only, submitted through NYSSMA’s application platform using the director’s NAfME Member ID. Three conditions must all be true before you can be selected.

Please note that your student will not be eligible for selection to All-State until:

• The online application form is completed.
• The student is registered for the festival and participates in the adjudication.
• The school participation fee has been paid.

Read that last one twice. It is a fee paid by your school, not by you, and if it has not been paid you are not eligible no matter what you score. Nothing you do alone can fix it.

The practical consequence: a great audition is not enough on its own. Someone at your school has to file for you, on time, in a system you cannot log into. Ask your director early whether your application is in, and ask again before the deadline.

NYSSMA limits All-State applicants to students who are in 10th or 11th grade when they audition.

An applicant must be in 10th (sophomore) or 11th (junior) grade in school at the time of audition.

That leaves two chances in four years of high school. Ninth and twelfth grade are not eligible.

All-State consideration runs through a Level VI solo, selected from the repertoire lists in the current manual. The top of the scale carries an obligation for the adjudicator.

Every student who earns a score of 98-100 must be recommended.

About 6,500 students in grades 10 and 11 audition across 15 zones and more than 40 audition sites. About 825 are selected for eight All-State ensembles and are notified in late August.

Area All-State is the honors festival most students have never had explained to them. It runs at the zone level — New York is divided into 15 zones — and a NYSSMA press release about one zone’s festival shows the scale:

That is one zone, one year: four ensembles — Area All State Jazz Ensemble, Mixed Chorus, Symphonic Band, and Symphony Orchestra — over a fall weekend, with conductors drawn from Eastman, SUNY Fredonia, and area schools.

Do the comparison that nobody does for you. Conference All-State selects roughly 825 students from the entire state. Area All-State seated 320 in a single zone. Same solo evaluation feeding both — Zone 2’s published integration table shows Area All-State selection working from your solo score plus teacher recommendation, and the audition fee is $30.

If Conference All-State is roughly one in eight, Area All-State is the honors credential that is actually within reach for a strong student — a real ensemble weekend, a real program bio line, selected from the same audition you were already doing. Students who only ever hear about “All-State” often do not know this tier exists until someone else from their school makes it.

Zone 2’s integration table sets a hard floor, and a rule that shifts high All-State scores.

All State Level 6 scores that fall at or below the 96 mark will be considered one step above their Level 6 equivalent in the integration table. The Area All-State selection committee will not consider nominations with a score of 20 or less on Levels I-IV; a score of 89 or less on Levels V-IV.

The table is explicitly not the whole decision.

This Zone 2 integration table for solo sheets is intended to present the most thorough and complete integration table possible for all score results. It is not intended to be the only component for selection into an Area All-State ensemble. In addition to this integration table the selection committee will use teacher recommendations to produce a balanced, ability appropriate, Area All-State ensemble for the selected festival literature.

It applies to all Area All-State ensembles except for Jr. High Chorus, and was revised June 2023 and approved 11/2023.

Two cautions. This is Zone 2’s document — other zones publish their own, and the numbers are not interchangeable. And the phrase “Levels V-IV” appears exactly as quoted in the source; we have not corrected it, because we cannot verify from this document alone what was intended.

The scale of the Texas process is stated plainly on TMEA’s own page:

over 70,000 high school students across the state audition in their TMEA Region

And the progression:

Individuals perform selected music for a panel of judges who rank each instrument or voice part. A select group of musicians advances to compete against musicians from other Regions in their TMEA Area. The highest-ranking musicians judged at the TMEA Area competitions qualify to perform in one of 18 Texas All-State ensembles

So the path is Region → Area → State, with a ranking (not a rating) at every stage. This is a structural difference from New York worth understanding if you compare notes with out-of-state friends: NYSSMA’s ordinary festivals are evaluations against a standard, while every stage of the Texas pipeline is a competition against the people in the room.

TMEA auditions are not open entry. Two requirements run through your school.

A student must be enrolled as a full-time student (as defined by rule of the State Board of Education) in a Texas school during the semester in which the TMEA activity takes place.

A student must be certified by their TMEA Active Member director as an actively participating member in rehearsals and performance activities of the school’s parent musical organization during the entire semester.

If your school has no parent musical group, the student must be certified by a TMEA member sponsor instead.

Two things follow. Your band or orchestra director controls your entry, so the conversation about auditioning has to happen with them early. And leaving the school ensemble mid-semester can cost you the audition, whatever your playing level.

TMEA sets a hard ceiling on how long you can keep auditioning.

A student may not participate after the end of the eighth semester following their first enrollment in the ninth grade.

Eight semesters is four school years, counted from when you first entered ninth grade — not from when you started auditioning. If you repeat a year or take time away, the clock does not pause.

TMEA publishes its audition material on announced dates rather than releasing it quietly. For the 2026–2027 cycle:

Etude Books: Available April 15 at 8 am (CT)

Etudes: Available Monday, July 13, at Noon (CT)

Two separate dates, months apart. The books come first; the specific etudes you will actually play arrive in July.

TMEA’s Band Division publishes its Area audition dates well in advance: January 9, 2027 for this cycle, with January 8, 2028 already listed for the next. There are eight Areas, lettered A through H, each serving a fixed grouping of Regions — for example:

Area A - Regions 1, 6, 7, 16, 22

Put the published dates in a row and the year has a fixed shape: etude books in April, etudes in July, errata frozen September 1, Region auditions in the fall, Area in early January. If you make it past Region, the winter holidays are not a break — they are the two weeks before the highest-stakes audition of the cycle. Students who learn the Area date late learn it as bad news about their December.

Corrections to the audition material are posted up to a stated cutoff.

No errata changes will be made after September 1.

This matters more than it looks. A walkthrough video recorded in June may be describing a slightly different document than the one you will play. After September 1 the material is fixed, so anything published after that date is safe to trust against your copy.

Getting in is not the last cost. NYSSMA’s published fee schedule lists an All-State student fee for the Winter Conference, separate from what you pay to audition.

ALL-STATE STUDENT FEES – WINTER CONFERENCE 2025

2025-2026 SCHOOL YEAR – $900 — ($275 Registration/$625 Housing)

Plan for it before the audition, not after the acceptance letter.

NYSSMA’s published fee schedule lists the solo participation fees. The two unambiguous single values for the top of the ladder:

All-State — $36

AREA ALL-STATE — $30

Both are audition-entry fees, separate from the $900 Winter Conference cost that arrives if you are selected for All-State.

A transparency note: the same fee sheet lists the lower-level solo fees as paired values — “Level 1-4/Piano 1-4 — $20/$26” and “Level 5-6/Piano 5-6 — $30/$36” — and the document does not say what distinguishes the two numbers in each pair. We are not publishing an interpretation we cannot verify. If your school quotes you a number in those ranges, the fee sheet is consistent with it; which of the pair applies is a question for whoever registers you.

The repertoire lists live behind a paid, per-person subscription.

The manual is revised every three years, and the current edition is dated.

It applies through the end of the Spring 2027 Festival Season (June 2027). Access is at nyssmamanual.org.

The three-year cycle is worth knowing because it is frequently misremembered as five. If you are working from a secondhand list, check which edition it came from.

There are 825 places. NYSSMA’s Parents & Students page puts the field at over seven thousand.

Over 7000 students compete for the 825 positions in the 8 All-State ensembles.

Its own All-State Process page describes a smaller pool — approximately 6,500 sophomores and juniors auditioning at more than 40 sites across 15 zones. We have not been able to reconcile the two figures from published sources, so we are not picking one. Either way the ratio lands somewhere near one in eight.

We are flagging the discrepancy rather than averaging it, because a number you can check is worth more than a number that looks tidy. If you need an exact figure for an application, use the source you can cite, and cite which one.

There is a registration option that removes the score from the equation entirely. As one school district’s NYSSMA page describes it:

Students also have the option to attend for Comments Only, in which a grade will not be included.

You still play the full evaluation, and you still get the part with lasting value:

Each student will receive his or her own adjudication sheet with comments from a music educator.

Why this is labeled “expert” and not “official”: we verified this on a school district’s official NYSSMA information page — the schools are who actually register students — but we could not find the option described on nyssma.org itself. Ask the teacher who registers you whether it is available for your festival.

Why it matters: the fear of a low score becoming a permanent record is one of the most common reasons students avoid their first festival. This option exists precisely for that case — the feedback without the number. If you are on the fence about auditioning at all, this is the lowest-stakes way through the door.

NYSSMA runs roughly 145 solo, small ensemble and major ensemble festivals across New York State each spring, and it is explicit about what they are.

Evaluations, not competitions.

The exception is All-State.

That distinction is doing real work. At an ordinary festival you are being measured against the level’s standard, not ranked against the person who played before you. Nobody loses a spot because you played well.

It stops being true the moment your score is forwarded for All-State consideration. Then it is a ranking, and the number matters relative to everyone else’s.

NYSSMA solo scores are not on one scale. Zone 2’s published integration table pairs each level with its score, and the ceilings are different. An excerpt, in the source’s own format:

Level 2, 3 and 4 results top out at 28. Level 5, Level 6 and All-State results top out at 100.

So a 27 at Level 4 is near the top of its scale, and a 92 at Level 6 sits well down its own. Comparing the two numbers directly tells you nothing. This is the single most common source of confusion when students and parents try to read a score sheet, and no official page explains it in plain language.

Scope note: this table is published by Zone 2 and is used for Area All-State selection in that zone. Other zones publish their own tables. Check your zone’s document before treating any threshold here as your own.

Festival registration runs through one door, and it is not yours.

Students may not be registered by parents, private music teachers, or music studios.

All students (including piano students) must be registered through the student’s K-12 day school.

The deadline has the same shape — it belongs to your school, not to you:

The minimum deadline is 6 weeks before the festival, but many schools and districts have earlier deadlines.

The ONLY place to find the deadline is from the registering school.

Notice what this means in practice. NYSSMA’s public deadline is a floor, not the real date — your school’s internal deadline comes first, it can be much earlier, and no website will tell you what it is. The student who asks their school music teacher in September knows the real date. The student who checks nyssma.org in January finds out they needed to ask someone, weeks ago, in person.

Homeschooled or your school doesn’t participate? That is exactly the situation to raise with NYSSMA directly, because the standard door is closed by design.

NYSSMA publishes a Sight-Reading Handbook, and it spells out the procedure most students only learn by rumor.

An eight-measure melody will be furnished at the Festival site.

The soloist will be given a minimum of one minute to study the sight-reading. Soloists may hum, whistle, sing or silently finger the sight-reading exercise during this time.

A nonstop rendition is considered to be the goal of sight-reading.

The tempo for the sight-reading will be established by the adjudicator.

Only the soloist, adjudicator, and authorized NYSSMA personnel may remain in the room during the sight-reading portion of the evaluation.

So: eight measures, at least one minute to study it, and you are explicitly allowed to hum, whistle, sing, or finger through it during that minute. The goal is to keep going, not to be perfect. The adjudicator sets the tempo, and parents wait outside.

A caution about the date. The handbook states these requirements are excerpted from the NYSSMA Manual, Volume XXVIII (effective July 1, 2006–June 30, 2009), and that “requirements may be subject to change with subsequent editions.” The current manual is Edition 2026. The handbook is still published on NYSSMA’s site, but treat the fine print as historical until you confirm it against the current manual or your festival’s instructions.

On instruments and music, NYSSMA states:

Students are expected to bring their own instrument, including drum set.

Any legal copy may be used.

A second copy for the adjudicator is highly recommended, but not required.

On accompaniment:

Accompanists are not required except for All-State.

Recorded and electronic accompaniments are permitted, but students must supply the equipment.

Two things worth planning around. If you are auditioning for All-State you need an accompanist, which is a cost and a scheduling problem that starts months earlier than most students expect. And the standard for your music is legality, not format — the common worry about showing up with the wrong kind of photocopy is answered by that one phrase.

One caution: these two rules sit on the same page, and NYSSMA does not say how they interact. Whether recorded accompaniment satisfies the All-State requirement is not stated anywhere we could find. Ask your director before you plan around it.

TMEA attaches a restriction to the audition material itself.

Etudes are copyrighted materials. Do not post etudes on any websites or social media.
